Long Term Care

There is a good chance that you (or one of your parents) may need to pay for nursing home, assisted living, or home health care one day. In fact, more than half of the U.S. population will require long-term care at some point in their lives.

The U.S. population is living longer.  The average life span is now over 80 years of age, and with advances in pharmaceutical research, we can reasonably expect to continue to live even longer.  Combine this longer lifespan with the likelihood that many of us will need some type of health care assistance.  The result is usually a sincere concern about the potential cost of caring for ourselves and/or our parents.

There have been a number of different studies in recent years analyzing the cost of common types of long term health care.  In general, the costs are highest in major metropolitan areas.  Here is a sample range of costs for various services:

Nursing Home: $100 - $400 per day

Assisted Living: $1,000 - $6000 per month

Home Health Aide: $10 - $30 per hour
